Great hike. Its gonna be quite a challenge but in the end its so worth it. Such a beautiful lake at the of this journey.
Beautiful Lake. Made a loop by using 3 different trails. Used part of the AT
Road in is pretty rough
If you’re starting your hike from the tamanny trailhead parking lot by 80 west.. it’s about a 2hr hike to sunfish pond. It’s actually a very tough hike with consistently uneven rocky trails and pretty steep inclines throughout the hike. Also saw two big rattlesnakes right by the trail. Be careful. Don’t underestimate the hike.
This was a bucket list hike for me. We parked at the Douglas parking lot, which is located next to the northern-most area of the Worthington State Park campground. There is a public restroom here. We hiked to Sunfish Pond via the Garvey Springs trail. There is a pretty waterfall close to the road. The trail up from the lot is steep, but manageable. Once we arrived at the pond, we began the loop around the pond by taking the Appalachian Trail. This runs along the shore of the pond. In certain sections it is a scramble over large rocks. My hiking poles definitely came in handy here. There are some areas that open up to the pond, but again, these are rocky "shores". They are good areas to take pictures though. Continuing the loop via the Sunfish Pond Fire Road trail is an easier hike than the AT portion. It is relatively flat and wide. Take a left at the Turquoise Trail to complete the loop back to the Garvey Springs trail. Along the Turquoise Trail, there is a pretty overlook of Sunfish Pond pond. Another nice spot to take pictures. From there we hiked back down to the parking lot. In total, the hike was about 4.3 miles and took us approximately 2 hrs 45 minutes. It was well worth it and I look forward to doing it again.
